Jere Morehead

Jere Morehead, President of the University of Georgia, felt strongly about extending his concern to the Jewish community on campus after October 7. In a statement to support of the Jewish community, he is quoted, “As the world continues to watch and despair over the unfolding events, I am outraged and deeply saddened by the terrorist acts perpetrated against innocent civilians in Israel. In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to deploy every available resource to promote the safety and well-being of every member of the UGA community.  Let me be clear, this University will never tolerate the escalation of rhetoric into violence of any kind. We are committed to free speech, but our first priority is—and will always be—the safety of our campus community.” Morehead personally visited the on-campus Hillel after the fighting broke out, alongside UGA’s police department and other administrators to reassure its Jewish student community that their safety and well-being remains a clear priority on the campus of UGA.
