The Synagoga and Ecclesia statue symbolizes equality, mutual respect, and shared learning between the Jewish and Catholic faiths. The original statue was created in 2015 at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia to mark the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, coinciding with the visit of Pope Francis. Nostra Aetate was a historic declaration by the Catholic Church in 1965 rejecting the claim of Jewish responsibility for the death of Christ, a charge that fueled centuries of antisemitism.
